Legends of the Confederacy States Navy. H.L. Hunley - 1863-1864. Anchors. Built in 1863, the H.L. Hunley made history on Feb. 17, 1864, at Charleston, S.C. when she attacked and sank the U.S.S. Housatonic, and became the first submarine ever to destroy an enemy warship. Although the Hunley and her men were lost, their names are forever written on the Confederate Roll of Honor.
